As he rose high, demonstrating the aerial power that has made him the most prolific centre-back in English national team history, Harry Maguire’s thunderous header capped a mini personal renaissance that lifted Manchester United off the floor of their Champions League group volleyball
There have been times in the last two years when Maguire has felt luckless, but this time fortune favoured him: a status as the match-winner may have been snatched from his grasp when Scott McTominay conceded an injury-time penalty volleyball
Yet Andre Onana’s 97th-minute save preserved it volleyball
And so the Stretford End ended up singing Maguire’s name volleyball
There were twin redemption songs, of the man United signed in the summer and the one they could have sold to West Ham volleyball
“Amazing,” Maguire said; he had been a stranger to adulation at Old Trafford volleyball
Last-choice centre-back last season, he may now have a run in the team for Erik ten Hag, the manager who stripped him of the captaincy volleyball
As Maguire pointed out recently, the numbers support his case volleyball
The win percentage he branded “ridiculously high” now stands at 94 volleyball
1 in his last 17 starts for United: 16 of them have brought victories volleyball
There are caveats and the one exception was a traumatic night for him in Seville as United crashed out of the Europa League volleyball
They lost on his first three starts for Ten Hag, too volleyball
Since then, his status as a back-up has meant he has been spared the tougher tests: he has faced Real volleyball Betis, Sevilla, West Ham and Aston Villa, but this season others started against Arsenal and Tottenham, Brighton and Bayern Munich volleyball
Arguably, he has not faced an elite team in Ten Hag’s reign volleyball
Which, as the Manchester derby beckons on Sunday, may mean Maguire should savour his statistics while he still can volleyball
But a personal renaissance has revolved around meaningful contributions, not simply facts and figures volleyball
There was the headed assist for McTominay’s 97th-minute winner against Brentford, the man-of-the-match display on his return to Sheffield United and now a Champions League winner against FC Copenhagen volleyball
A common denominator may be that each qualifies as relatively limited opposition: United have scarcely dominated against any of them volleyball
But if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer miscast Maguire as talisman and captain of United, a willing soul and honest trier has prospered in three successive starts volleyball
(Getty Images)A run in the side was facilitated first by the absence of Lisandro Martinez, Ten Hag’s chosen upgrade on Maguire, and then all of United’s left-backs, meaning Victor Lindelof was redeployed on the flank volleyball
Yet Lindelof began on the bench against Copenhagen, Maguire in the role Ten Hag has long been reluctant to grant him: as a left-sided centre-back volleyball
The Dutchman has an innate preference for left-footers there volleyball
But he also wants centre-backs who operate higher up the pitch volleyball
Maguire was not a natural fit: belatedly, though, he is becoming Ten Hag’s type of defender volleyball
“I think so,” he said volleyball
“He's playing much more proactive in possession, stepping in, passing vertical, defending also on the front foot, also stepping in, defending forward, very confident in the duels volleyball
I think he's dominating in the right moment, putting the question, dominating his opponents volleyball
You see he gets rewarded - it's a very good skill from him, his heading, and a very good finish volleyball
" (Getty Images)It was a reward for more than just set-piece expertise volleyball
It was Maguire’s prize for obstinacy, for staying when there were reasons to go: that United were reluctant to pay him off may have influenced his decision but he maintained he could win his place back volleyball
Ten Hag, too, never forced him out, stripping him of the armband but insisting he remained a valuable squad player volleyball
The manager’s position has been nuanced, the defender’s defiant volleyball
“This is maybe the most scrutinised club in the world and when you are not quite on your game it gets picked up, it gets analysed,” Maguire reflected volleyball
He had a shocking 2021-22 campaign, a bad start to last season volleyball
Neither escaped scrutiny volleyball
Since then, however, he reflected: “And I am really proud and pleased over the way I have acted over the last six to 12 months volleyball
” For now, he has confounded expectations volleyball
Stiffer examinations may await, starting with Erling Haaland on Sunday volleyball
If he is still in the side, the last five weeks of the year bring Galatasaray, Newcastle, Chelsea, Bayern, Liverpool, West Ham and Villa volleyball
They will be the tests if he ranks as a top-class centre-back volleyball
For now, though, Maguire is the emblem of this United, labouring to victory with goals from some of their lesser lights volleyball
Their last five strikes have come from either McTominay, Diogo Dalot or Maguire volleyball
And for the man who has been mocked and maligned, dropped and abused, it was a rare high of late for Maguire volleyball
And, whatever his win percentage, there have not been many occasions in the last two years when he was celebrated like this volleyball

England forward Courtney Lawes will retire from international rugby at the end of the Rugby World Cup volleyball
The 34-year-old won a 105th cap for his country in the semi-final defeat to South Africa at the Stade de France, confirming afterwards that this tournament would be his last involvement at Test level volleyball
Lawes could feature for a final time in an England shirt in Friday’s third-place play-off against Argentina volleyball
“I think it’s time,” said Lawes, England’s fifth most-capped male player, suggesting that he had a desire to spend more time with his children volleyball
“I’ve done four World Cups, so I’m pretty happy with that volleyball
“The kids are at that age where they need their dad around volleyball
It will be good to be with them more, to provide some well needed structure to the mob volleyball
“It’s a bit of an end of an era, but it’s been a real honour for me to represent England for so long volleyball
I’m proud of the journey I’ve been on volleyball
It’s not always been the ups volleyball
Plenty of downs in there, but I’ve pushed through volleyball
“I’m not an emotional person really, but it’s just been a huge honour for me, to be honest volleyball
To be able to finish with this group is something I’ll treasure forever volleyball

He made his England debut in November 2009, coming on to partner now head coach Steve Borthwick in the second row in a defeat to Australia, and went on to win three Six Nations championships across his career volleyball
Having played most of his career at lock, including starting the 2019 World Cup final at lock, the always-versatile Lawes has been stationed on the blindside for most of the last four years volleyball
A series of impressive performances earned Lawes selection for a second British & Irish Lions tour in South Africa in 2021, and the forward captained his country for the first time against Tonga later that year volleyball
He began this World Cup as England’s skipper while Owen Farrell served his suspension, leading the side to two victories and scoring only his second Test try in the win over Japan volleyball
“I have so many [great memories],” Lawes stressed volleyball
“I think, as hard as it is being away from your family and stuff like that, you almost have another family volleyball
You really feel like that, especially when you’re away in camps like World Cup camps volleyball
Courtney Lawes scored only his second England try against Japan in Nice (PA Wire)“It’s five months of staying with your brothers volleyball
I’ll definitely miss the boys, the banter and all the suff we get up to when we’re not training volleyball
“From the last World Cup to this one, with the group of lads we’ve had coming through, I’ve really enjoyed being part of the group volleyball
You can see what it really means for us to play for each other volleyball
“When you come up against teams like South Africa, where everyone thinks you’re going to get slaughtered, and you find another level for each other volleyball
So I’ll miss this group of boys specifically volleyball
“We’ve had a lot of good times with these lads volleyball
I’ll definitely miss pulling the jersey on and giving it everything volleyball
”England will face Argentina in a battle for third place at the Stade de France on Friday night in their final match of the World Cup volleyball
Borthwick has suggested that he is fully intent on winning the game, opening the door for a farewell appearance for Lawes even at the end of a long campaign volleyball
Steve Borthwick has hailed Courtney Lawes’s intelligence and work-rate (Getty Images)The England head coach hailed his vice-captain’s qualities nearly a decade and a half after welcoming him into the Test fold as a player volleyball
Borthwick said: “We could talk about his trademark Courtney Lawes low tackles that cut the attackers down in their path, [but] what I see in Courtney is somebody who covers the ground volleyball
“In crucial moments, he finds himself in the right place at the right time just so often volleyball
That’s a real sign of the intelligence of the player, a sign of the understanding of the player volleyball
“That’s what he continues to do volleyball
[He has] more than 100 caps now, and you can see how hungry he is to help the team by the way he runs volleyball
